The airline, speaking several hours after the plane had been due to
land in the Chinese capital, said it was still too early so say whether
the aircraft had crashed. It said there had been no distress signal and
it cited early speculation that the plane may have landed in Nanming in
southern China.
As news of the disappearance filtered through to
distraught friends and relatives who had been waiting for the flight to
arrive in Beijing, Malaysia Airline said it was still investigating and
took no questions at a brief news conference.
"Our
team is currently calling the next-of-kin of passengers and crew," the
airlines' group chief executive officer, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, said in a
statement. "Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency
responders and authorities and mobilize its full support."
"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members," he said.
The airline said that the Boeing 777-200 aircraft had 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members on board.
It said the passengers were of 13 different nationalities, including 153 from China and four from the United States.
Flight
MH370 departed from Kuala Lumpur at 12:41 a.m. Saturday local time,
according to a statement from the airline. It was scheduled to land in
Beijing at 6:30 a.m.
The plane last had contact with air
traffic controllers two hours after it took off 120 nautical miles off
the east coast of the Malaysian town of Kota Bharu, the airline said on
Saturday.
Malaysian and Vietnamese authorities were
working jointly on search operations in the area. China has dispatched
two maritime rescue ships to the South China Sea to help in rescue work,
state television reported.
An
official at the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said the plane had
failed to check in as scheduled while it was flying over the sea between
Malaysia and Ho Chi Minh City.
"Its code didn't appear in our
system," Bui Van Vo, the authority's flight control department manager,
told Reuters by telephone.
China's official Xinhua news agency
also quoted the Civil Aviation Administration of China as saying the
flight lost contact while flying through Vietnamese airspace.
No signal had been picked up from the plane in Vietnam, a Vietnamese rescue official said on Saturday.
"We
have been seeking but no signal from the plane yet," Pham Hien,
director of a Vietnam maritime search and rescue coordination center in
Vung Tau, told Reuters by telephone.
Vietnamese and Chinese
media had reported that a signal from the plane had been picked up. The
reports did not identify what kind of signal.
"The information on local media about the signal near the Cape Ca Mau was inaccurate," Pham said.
In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters, "We are
extremely worried. We are doing all we can to get details. The news is
very disturbing. We hope everyone on the plane is safe."China is helping to locate the aircraft, Chinese state television said on one of its official microblogs.
The
flight was piloted by Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, a Malaysian aged 53,
according to the airline. He has a total of 18,365 flying hours and
joined Malaysia Airlines in 1981.
Distressed family members of those on board had begun gathering at Beijing airport on Saturday.
Chang
Ken Fei, a Malaysian waiting at Beijing airport for friends to arrive,
said: "I got here at seven (a.m.). At first I thought the plane was just
delayed as normal, so I came a bit later. I've just been waiting and
waiting. I asked them what was going on but they just tell us, 'We don't
know.'" If the plane is found to have crashed, the loss would
mark the second fatal accident involving a Boeing 777 in less than a
year, after an unblemished safety record since the jet entered service
in 1995. Last summer, an Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 crash landed in San Francisco, killing three passengers.
Boeing
said it was aware of reports that the Malaysia Airlines plane was
missing and was monitoring the situation but had no further comment.
The Russian Parliament could organize a vote on Crimea’s annexation
five days after the referendum on the pro-Russian region. The proposal
was approved today by the parliamentary Committee for Constitutional
Legislation and should be discussed in the Duma, next Tuesday. A
decision that risks to inflame further the tension with US and EU that
approved yesterday a first set of sanctions against Moscow.
In the meantime, an International team of OSCE observers was blocked for the second time since yesterday from entering in Crimea by unidentified armed men.
The Russian Foreign Ministry warned today that they intend to
respond to EU “nonconstructive” sanctions, “Russia will not accept such
language of sanctions and threats, but, in the event of their
implementation in practice they will not be left without a response”,
the Russian diplomacy said on a note published on the Foreign Ministry
website.
Earlier, Russia has allegedly decided to break off diplomatic relations with Ukraine,
according sources quoted by the Ukrainian news agency Unian. The agency
reports that the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to
the United Nations Vitaly Churkin announced the decision. “Moscow does
not recognize the legitimacy of the current Ukrainian power, that is why
we decided to break off diplomatic relations with Ukraine”, said
Churkin.
Earlier, Russia’s upper house of the Parliament supported Crimea’s
parliament right to hold a referendum on the region’s future status.
Foreign ministers from central Europe, the Baltics and Nordics
condemned on Friday Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine and a
planned referendum planned by Crimea’s government, calling for the EU to
send an observation mission to Kiev. The group of countries, many of
them sharing land borders with Russia or the Ukraine and living with the
memory of Soviet rule, have taken a tough line in the face of Moscow as
the crisis has escalated. “Nordic and Baltic countries and the
Visegrad countries’ foreign ministers condemned today … the attack on

The Italy coach is believed to have been contacted about taking over at Spurs although no official approach has been made with Tim Sherwood contracted until the end of next season
Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has thrown his name into the hat to become the next Tottenham manager following initial discussions about his future beyond this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
The Italian was linked with a move to White Hart Lane when Andre Villas-Boas was sacked towards the end of 2013, and the Evening Standard is reporting that the Italian, who is almost certain to leave the national team after the World Cup, has been contacted about a new role at Spurs.
The 56-year-old has a close friendship with Tottenham technical director and fellow Italian Franco Baldini, having spent time together at Roma in 2004. Prandelli was unable to take charge of a match with the Giallorossi though due to his wife falling seriously ill, with Baldini director of football at the club during Prandelli’s short time there.
It is believed no official approach has been made to Prandelli, with Tim Sherwood given a contract until the end of next season, and Dutch pair Louis van Gaal and Frank de Boer also admired by the club’s chairman, Daniel Levy. Although he is philosophical about his own prospects of remaining head coach next term, Sherwood would make it difficult for Levy to ignore him were he to guide Tottenham to a place in the 2014-15 Champions League.
It is thought , however, that Prandelli, 56, is keen to work in the Premier League and is understood to have responded favourably to the idea of moving to north London. Although his grasp of English is limited, the former Fiorentina boss and his coaching staff are said to have been working hard on their command of the language in recent months.
Sources in Italy revealed the initial contact with Prandelli was made last December, the month in which Andre Villas-Boas was dismissed by the Tottenham board.
Since then, it seems Prandelli has grown even more enthusiastic about the prospect of working in the Premier League and it is believed further soundings were made this month. Were the job offered today, it is likely Prandelli would accept.
Since he led Italy to second place at Euro 2012, it has been expected that Prandelli would leave after this summer’s tournament in Brazil. An announcement was anticipated after Italy secured qualification last September but this was delayed.
More light could be shed on the situation in the coming weeks, however, as Prandelli is due to hold talks with Giancarlo Abete, the president of the Italian FA, in mid-March. Prandelli is also likely to be asked about his future before Italy’s friendly against Spain on March 5.
The final word will, of course, rest with Levy, a huge admirer of Van Gaal. The 62-year-old is scheduled to end his second spell in charge of Holland after the World Cup, and has always dreamed of working in the English top flight. If an agreement can be reached with the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona coach, he still looks the clear favourite.
Furthermore, Baldini’s role is under scrutiny after he recommended the £30million, club‑record signing of Erik Lamela from Roma, which has failed to bear fruit so far. It is hard to imagine Spurs appointing an ally of Baldini if they are not convinced about the technical director’s long-term suitability for the role.
Yet Prandelli remains an attractive proposition. He kept both Parma and Fiorentina in the upper echelons of Serie A during his time at those clubs, between 2002-10, and has enhanced his reputation as an outstanding coach through his work with Italy.
Both AC Milan and Juventus had shown an interest in him earlier this year but Milan chose to appoint a rookie coach in Clarence Seedorf, while Juve are likely to press ahead with Antonio Conte, despite his occasionally combustible temperament off the field.
Prandelli’s salary of about £2million a year before tax is substantially less than that of the top coaches in Europe, including Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger, and Prandelli would be happy to work at Spurs even if they did not qualify for the Champions League — as long as he had guarantees about being given time to implement his methods. Clearly, the presence of Baldini would be fundamental to any agreement.

A titanic confrontation as Europe’s two supreme attacking forces face off for a place in the quarter-finals.
After the disappointment of previous European campaigns, Manuel Pellegrini has been able to do what Roberto Mancini never could: replicate City’s irrepressible domestic form on the continental stage. It will not be lost on Barcelona that in the group stages City were more than a match for Bayern Munich, who so comprehensively dismantled the Blaugrana in last season’s semis.
Barca have plenty of European pedigree, having won this competition three times in the last eight seasons, but since the departure of Pep Guardiola their aura of invincibility has slipped. A shaky group-stage campaign, including a humbling defeat to ten-man Ajax, confirmed that Tata Martino’s side no longer bestride the European landscape quite as colossally as they once did.
But Barcelona have abundant experience of big European nights like these, while Pellegrini’s arrivistes have none. And Lionel Messi and co remain a fearsome attacking contingent, with ten goals in their last two games underlining Barcelona’s continued potency. City will not fear their visitors. But they underestimate them at their peril.

Manchester City entertain Barcelona in the Champions League this evening.
The match is being billed as a meeting between arguably the two most attacking teams in Europe, and football fans are hoping for a match that meets those expectations.
While there are suggestions Barcelona are not the team that dominated in Europe just a couple of years ago, there is no denying that they have a frightening array of talents at their disposal.

It’s been a busy week for Jose, taking down Barcelona as well Arsene Wenger. Even if, as Mourinho asserts, Barca come to Manchester in reduced circumstances, what remains is sufficiently potent to blow away most teams.
This tie has cast City as star gazers hosting the great Leo Messi and his cast of champions. They are the new kids experiencing this elevation for the first time. City froze when confronted by Bayern in the group stages at the Etihad. Yes they recovered brilliantly at the Allianz but in a dead rubber as far as Bayern were concerned. They have the tools to trouble any team, but will need to break free of the sense of occasion if they are to build an advantage against Barca, something they failed to do against Chelsea in the league as well as Bayern.
Barca might have surrendered a little of the sense of invincibility they one projected but not their affinity for the ball. They still dominate possession like no other team in the history of the game in important matches, a feature City must disrupt tonight.
As well as Messi, Barca can call upon the likes of Sanchez, Fabregas, Pedro, Tello, Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets and a bloke called Neymar. They can’t all play at the same time, of course, but they are all available and might just represent the best ‘worst’ team in the history of sport.

The ongoing struggle by the residents of Corleone, Sicily, against the Mafia is the subject of a new documentary by Tony Fragola, a professor of broadcasting and cinema.
The village of Corleone, best known to American moviegoers as the birthplace of the fictitious Mafia Don Vito Corleone of Francis Ford Coppola’s film “The Godfather,” is a place where villagers have long fought against the Mafia, said Fragola.
The documentary, titled “Another Corleone: Another Sicily,” is a labor of love for Fragola whose is of Sicilian heritage and teaches courses in Italian Cinema.
The picturesque 13th century village has been witness to hundreds of innocent people killed by the Mafia. Starting in 1990, the Italian government passed a law allowing it to confiscate lands owned by Mafioso and return them to local cooperatives.
“The land is the real basis and symbol for the Mafia, especially in Corleone which is where the most brutal and bloody Mafia chiefs come from,” Fragola said. “If you claim the land and return it the citizens your have symbolically undermined the power of the Mafia.”
Fragola will be on academic research leave in the spring of 2008 interviewing Corleone residents, especially women, who are fighting the Mafia’s destructive control.
“A Beautiful Memory: A Mother and Her Sons Against the Mafia,” Fragola’s previous film, depicted the heroic struggle of Felice Impastato, a widow of a Sicilian Mafioso whose son Giuseppe “Peppino” Impastato was slain by the Sicilian Mafia for protesting against the group. The film was first shown last year in a demonstration against the Mafia in San Vito Lo Capo, a notorious Mafia stronghold and most recently at the Center for the Arts, College of Staten Island.

Milan was the Western Roman Empire's capital for a short but significant 109 years. Its position at the top was reconfirmed by Napoleon in 1786, when he declared the city his centre of the Cisalpine Republic. Rome was chosen, some say arbitrarily, as Italy's capital in 1861. But for most northern Italians, Milan is the country's heart.
Milan is Italy's business capital, home to the country's stock exchange as well as its renowned fashion and design industries. But while people work hard, they play hard too. Whether you're up for eating or drinking, football or shopping, Milan excels at recreation.
You won't be dashing from street to street ticking sights off a must-see list, as in Florence, but cultural gems are hardly few and far between. The city is home to Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper (Santa Maria delle Grazie & The Last Supper). Arguably the artist's finest achievement, it was miraculously spared from Second World War bombing as the building around it fell.

The pollution can be oppressive: on a good day, you'll see the Alps from the roof of the Duomo, but on a bad day, city driving is restricted according to number plates in an ongoing attempt to lower vehicle emissions. Local politics can be chaotic, with issues so complex that they're often unintelligible even to the Milanese.
There are also those who claim that Milan is overly urban and unlike the rest of Italy. There may be some truth in this, but chatty barmen still serve cappuccinos with heart-shaped froth to their female customers, and the markets' vegetable vendors succeed in bringing the countryside to Milan and forcing the city slickers to slow their pace for a moment.
Those who look beyond the glamour will discover a city that strides out in style. Locals look to the future, whether it be the 2015 Expo or next season's fashion catwalks. They just sometimes need tourists to show them what a treasure they have right here, right now.

Filmmaker Jason Baffa received his first camera, a Super 8, when he was in grade school as a gift from his grandmother after his older cousin, Christopher, got him excited about film when he was 7 years old. More than 30 years later, the El Segundo resident has become a renowned surf filmmaker. His latest film, “Bella Vita,” made its North American premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival last week.
With the documentary's star, surfer, artist and environmentalist Chris Del Moro, “Bella Vita” explores the burgeoning surfing scene in Italy while exploring the country's culture through its traditions. The film also follows Del Moro on a journey to his ancestral home with some friends along for the ride.
Baffa and Del Moro met in 2008 when SBIFF screened Baffa's second documentary, “One California Day,” and Del Moro's film, “Sliding Liberia,” as a double header. Coincidentally in 2011, they reacquainted while vacationing in Bali. They bonded when they discovered they were both sons of Italian dads and still had strong ties to that culture. A film about surfing in Italy was discussed, but Baffa knew it would be a challenge. Yet at the same time he realized it allowed him to do “something more with the genre.”
“As Chris told me more stories about his upbringing and splitting time between California and Italy, I knew there was something there,” Baffa said. “I really had to work on him to be the reluctant star. I think in his mind it was going to be more of an expose on the locals and the surf scene. I kept saying, 'Chris you’re the thread to this film, it’s your journey and your connection to surfing.' It introduces the audience to all these things. We might have something that could connect to more people. Part of that was letting the journey happen.”
The journey began with a very tight budget when Baffa met Del Moro in Italy, in the surrounding areas of Pisa, in August of 2012. A very small crew joined them later including cinematographer Scott Kassenoff (who joined them a month in and stayed for 36 days) and camera assistant Jonathan Taylor (who they begged to fly over when they realized handling two 35mm cameras, two Super 16mm cameras and three HD cinema units were too much for two people). Dealing with the hefty equipment was one of many challenges Baffa and the crew had to face during filming. There was also the language barrier since Baffa knew little Italian. Through meeting new people and conducting “research with the camera,” Baffa and Del Moro discovered several ancillary characters, from winemakers to a violin maker, that added depth to the film.
“I was always one step behind,” said Baffa because of the language barrier. “I enjoy telling stories with a camera, but I feel maybe my strength is trying to be one step ahead. So when you're one step behind you're just pulling your hair out. We would do an interview and I really wouldn’t know everything we got. It wasn’t until months later when we returned home with the footage and got transcripts that I really did know what was there.”
Then there were weather complications.
“I knew we’d get a couple (good) days if we were there long enough, but we had 22 days of rain and bad wind,” Baffa said. “I was really depressed about it.”
Baffa filmed for 108 days, and halfway through that Kassenoff arrived with the 35mm cameras to film most of the surf scenes. While they were waiting for the cameras for a month, Baffa and Del Moro were able to get some of the nuts and bolts of the documentary figured out. Baffa knew he wouldn't get the spectacular surf footage comparable to some surfing locations around the world, but at the same time he needed footage that would survive the scrutiny of surfers worldwide. While at the mercy of Mother Nature, another challenge was trying to find the balance between the surf footage they did capture and the rest of the story, which Baffa feels is the strongest part of his film.
“I liken it to a bit of a tight rope between the core surf audience and the non-surf audience,” Baffa said. “If you go to far one way or the other you're going to alienate. It’s incredibly challenging and that was the last layer of stress.”
Baffa added, “If you want to get beautiful surf footage, go to Indonesia or Hawaii … I think we did end up getting some beautiful surf imagery, but for me as a film I never wanted that to be the weight of the film.”
Baffa said the Italians welcomed them with open arms, even the surfers who at times can be territorial.
“They were excited to share this thing they love so much,” Baffa said. “They were so happy that we thought surfing in Italy was worthy of a movie.”
“Bella Vita” was also somewhat of a family affair when Conner and Parker Coffin joined the cast. The Santa Barbara natives are Baffa's nephews.
“They are top-tier young professional surfers,” Baffa said. “It was funny having to talk to their agent about their schedule. They missed some contests to do it because they wanted to be part of it.”
The Coffin brothers are sons of Baffa's sister Krista and her husband Richard, who Baffa credits for exposing him to surfing. Baffa came to surfing later in life when he was attending Loyola Marymount University and studying film production.
“I became obsessed with surfing, which probably derailed my film career on some levels,” joked the 41-year-old, who did take a year and a half off from his day job of directing/filming commercials to film “Bella Vita.”
While “Bella Vita” is in part about the appreciation of family, he had the difficult choice of leaving his 8-month-old son to travel to Italy.
“I was turning down work, leaving my baby to pursue this passion project,” he said, but his parents, sister and his wife Linda were able to join him in Italy toward the end of filming.
Baffa said he also has a different outlook on surfing since he has a family.
“Now that I’m older I realize that surfing weaves into my life,” Baffa said. “When I was younger it was all about surf, chasing that and having fun. Now I balance it with family, having a child. I like the way the film does that, surfing is part of the fabric of Chris' life and it connects elements. It's used as a release at times, it's used for fun, it's a quest at other times to find that wave.”
“Bella Vita,” according to Baffa, would never have been completed without the help of numerous people including his Italian friends who helped translate the numerous interviews; Giusseppe Maio, a film student and surfer in Rome who helped coordinate gear and rental house pick-ups; Nico Pinzauti and Piergiorgio Castellani hosted them when they arrived in Italy: and the Los Angeles producing team of Greg Schultz, along with Manhattan Beach residents Scott Griest and Anh-Thu Le, who flew over to Italy to lend a hand.
Baffa hopes to have “Bella Vita” available in digital format and DVD by late spring with the possibility of screenings thoughout the U.S. and Italy before its release.
